Program Challenges 2022-2023
Challenges within Motherly Intercession’s RACS+ tutoring program revolve around three different areas, 2nd van driver, spatial limitations, and funding. In late 2022, the RACS+ Program lost our main form of transportation for the students. We were able to purchase a new van and hire a van driver in March of 2023. While this provided us with more opportunities and the ability to transport students, with the increase of students in our program, we are still finding limitations in taking students on different field trips or events. A 2nd van and van driver would make travel and venturing outside of Flint more accessible to our program.
Our goal for the RACS+ Program is to continue to expand and serve as many children as possible. With the number of students, we currently have, it would be difficult to enroll new students without our space at Motherly Intercession being over the max capacity. This is particularly true during our RACS+ Summer Program when we host all of the students at once. This is obviously a long-term challenge that we hope can be solved in the coming future buy purchasing a building in order to provide our students with a productive and safe learning environment.
Our final challenge that we face is the need for additional funding in our program. As we look to increase the number of students, we would also need to increase the number of staff in our program. This would mean hiring more peer mentors to tutor and monitor our students. Our program has the luxury of providing meals and snacks for the kids everyday that they attend the program. This can also be a costly expense as we look to increase our enrollment. Many of our students have never visited anywhere outside of the Flint area. Funding would also provide us more opportunities for the students to experience new activities and view the world outside of Flint.
